HISTORY

The GCSC was founded in 2016 after a town hall meeting about opioid use in Gaston County. More than 80 people went to the meeting. Their concern showed the need for organized follow-up. Within weeks, the Gaston Together Healthcare Commission started the Gaston Controlled Substance Coalition (GCSC).

We bring compassion, creativity, and collaboration to our many roles as we work to end the opioid epidemic in Gaston County. We have accomplished a lot in the short time we have been working. Since 2016 the GCSC:

  • helped organize the County Manager’s Opioid Summit (2018)

  • created an Opioid Overdose Response Team (2018)

  • helped establish the Gaston Adult Recovery Court (2021)

  • helped start the syringe services satellite program at Kintegra Health (2022).
